The Consigliere.
There is a seat beside the throne that matters more than the throne itself. It belongs to the wartime consigliere, and almost no one teaches you how to earn it.
The concept
Not a lawyer. Not a coach. Something closer.
A corporate consigliere is a trusted advisor who goes beyond the conventional roles of lawyer, chief operating officer, or executive coach. Someone intimately involved in an executive’s professional and personal orbit, willing to deliver gut level honest counsel, hold the leader accountable, and put on the armor when the fight actually starts.
Peacetime vs. wartime
Forged in the losses, not the wins.
Most advisors are peacetime consiglieres. This is a wartime discipline: present, armored, and ready to do battle on behalf of the person being served. Wartime means absorbing enterprise level stress so the executive can think clearly. It means keeping a leader’s worst instincts at bay in the moments that matter most. It means owning the plan even when the room disagrees with it.
The distinction
Duty to the person, not the entity.
The clearest difference between a consigliere and a company lawyer is duty. A corporate attorney’s obligation runs entirely to the entity. A consigliere’s obligation runs to the person, which means crossing into personal matters when those matters are affecting professional performance.
The council
Every leader needs a council of Jedi Knights.
People who will tell the truth without flattery and without an agenda. Not to protect an ego, but to keep the worst instincts at bay, and put on the armor when the person they serve cannot. Read enough of this and the goal gets simple: to become indispensable and foundational to the people who count on you. A secret weapon, not a talking point.
